Glossary of Terms: Term definition
- retirement, mandatory
The process which requires the retirement of ordained and diaconal ministers when they have reached age seventy on or before July 1. The mandatory retirement date for bishops is more difficult to describe inasmuch as they are assigned for four-year apointments to their episcopal areas. A bishop must retire on August 31 follwing the regular session of the Jursidictional Conference if the bishop's sixty-sixth birthday occurred on or before July 1 of the year in which the Jurisdictional Conference was held. The effect of this ruling is to require all bishops to retire on or before age seventy.
