Welcome to the Council of Bishops' Web site at UMC.org
Bishops of The United Methodist Church provide spiritual leadership to more than 11 million persons in a broad range of settings on four continents, including North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Historically, bishops preside over Annual and Central Conferences (regional areas of the church). They play an important leadership role in helping to set the direction of the church and its mission throughout the world.
On this site you can meet your bishop and learn about the many ways United Methodists are in ministry in your community and around the world.
The denomination’s financial agency is asking the Council of Bishops to call a special session of General Conference to address funding pensions for United States clergy and reorganization of its 40-year-old structure.
In September and October, 2009, four powerful typhoons hit the Philippines, causing widespread devastation. At least 1,000 people were killed, and thousands more were displaced because of flooding and landslides.
The Central Conference Pension Initiative (CCPI) launched in 2006 to raise $20 million for short-term relief and to enable the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits to develop pension programs in the central conferences. To date $18 million has been raised—and pilot projects are underway in Liberia and Mozambique.
