Blue Flamingo thrift shop energizes church
Dietz Memorial United Methodist Church in Omaha, Neb., was in danger of closing when the Rev. Stephanie Ahlschwede became its part-time pastor in 2002.
Now an innovative ministry -- in the form of a funky thrift shop called the Blue Flamingo -- has helped revitalize the congregation. Worship attendance has doubled to about 60 people, and there are no plans to close the church.
After receiving a grant from a local foundation, the congregation rented space near the church and opened the Blue Flamingo in 2004. By 2007, the store was self-supporting.
It stocks used goods, including clothing, books, household items and toys, as well as new fair-trade items.
"We work hard for the store to be welcoming," Ahlschwede said.
Every child who comes in gets a free book and the store hosts story time on the weekends. A literacy program recently started, and free yoga classes are planned. Once a month the Blue Flamingo hosts music or other arts programs. A community garden behind the store provides food to sell or give away.
"Service in the community has turned things around," Ahlschwede said. "Members want to be part of a church that makes a difference."
