New baptismal and professing membership vows of The United Methodist Church take effect on Jan. 1.
The 2008 "General Conference revised paragraphs 217 and 225 of the 2004 Book of Discipline to change vows for all professing members in The United Methodist Church," writes the Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards, director of worship for the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville, Tenn. New United Methodists will now promise to be loyal to Christ through The United Methodist Church and will promise to support the church with their witness as well as their prayers, presence, gifts and service. General Conference also clarified the process for receiving members from other denominations. The changes in the vows in the Discipline also affect the official ritual of the church in Baptismal Covenants I, II and IV found in The United Methodist Hymnal.
The new membership vows and ritual are now available on the GBOD Worship Web site .
