What Would Jesus Tweet?

Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, N.C., is spending the summer tweeting the Psalms.

The Rev. Ken Carter, senior pastor, was looking for a way to keep in touch with church members juggling busy summer schedules. So twice a day, members receive thoughts, fragments or paraphrases of each of the psalms. By reading two each day, six days a week, the entire book of Psalms can be read over the 90 days of summer (www.twitter.com/summerpsalms).

"Our goal is based on the simple conviction that we can take the scriptures to the people through technology, as they travel," Carter wrote on his blog.

"In summer, congregations can get disconnected from one another," says the Rev. Teresa Dunn, Providence's youth and young adult pastor. "It was an effort to connect throughout the summer, even if folks aren't physically here."

Dunn says Twitter was the ideal delivery method, since it can go directly to one's phone, without the need to be on a computer or log on to a Web site. "You can also follow people's comments online to see what they think about each entry," she adds.

"The response has been great," Dunn says. "Sometimes we see so much technology as a bad thing that sidetracks us. But using it to spread God's word at a time when so many people are running in different directions has been great."
