The month of April has lately turned into something to dread, an unhappy annual national moment of truth to confront.

In a fast-talking, fast-track world of achievement and prestige, United Methodist pastor Bill Barnes has always worried about those left behind. In the 1960s, as a minister just starting out, he did something unusual. He started an interracial, intercity church.

I heard a sermon the other day that made me rack my brain, do some research, make a long-distance call and wake up to reality. The minister's message was a question: %22When were you baptized?%22His point: We should know the date.

The hottest idea in religion right now rivals theexcitement of American Idol and the suspenseof Texas Hold ‘em. I’m talking about gnosticism, an ancientspirituality that was denounced as heresy by theearly church. It has risen again.

It's fun to stroll the malls in February, when the splashy colors in the show windows are Valentine's Day pink, red and white. It's also strange. In the post-Super Bowl gray of late winter, our high-flying consumer society finds a way to embrace romance ... and a saint. There's little information about St. Valentine. He was possibly a third-century Christian martyr in Rome, but he may never have existed at all. One explanation for attaching Valentine to the Feb. 14 love theme is that's the date when birds traditionally pair up for spring mating and nesting.
